Twelfth Night

Posted in Twelfth Night on 2010/01/12 by mattermind

…on the twelfth night of this insane Shakespeare project, and I’m not sure what (if anything) my true love is giving to me. But I will be posting later about reading the first act of the play. By way of teaser, here’s what I know so far:

Absolutely nothing.

I do not know what it’s the twelfth night of. I do not know what happened on the twelve days and eleven nights preceding.

I do not know who the major characters are (or minor ones for that matter).

I do not know what the plot involves, or where it is set. I have never been to a performance (gee, can you tell?), or read a single line of the play before to my knowledge. I’ve never heard it referenced outside of a list of titles.

I could, however, have told you beforehand that it is one of Shakespeare’s plays, had you asked. But that’s about all I could have said. Oh, and that it’s classified as a comedy. I saw that written somewhere too.

So it isn’t the case that I know ipso facto nil nada about The Twelfth Night — just damned near, which is the same thing. I’d say it’s high time to fix that.

Hamlet is so significant, we inherit a large chunk of it as human beings by merely surviving our inadequate K-12 educations. That’s not the case with a this one.

It’s all virgin territory here. Starting… right now.
